Tortoise Shell has been the "Holy Grail" of guitar picks for as long as I can remember...and, for a considerably shorter time than that [we won't get picky] we have been trying to make picks which are legal and non-lethal to life forms, and which get the same sound.
John's wonderful Studio Picks taught people that a pick could be redesigned...and has 3 different picking points,each of which gets a different sound! So, after using Casein [a resin made from Milk and Phosphoric Acid] for our Faux Tortoise Shell Pins, it wasn't much of a stretch of the imagination to think about doing the Studio™ Picks in Casein.
Our NEW John Pearse® FAST TURTLES™ are so named in honor of all the tortoises who got away safely!
They are available in 3 different gauges of Thin [1.2mm], MEDIUM [2.5mm with Dimple] and Extra Heavy [4mm with Dimple]. They also come with a complimentary cloth pouch so that they won't get left in your pockets and go through the washing machine.

Buffalo Horn is hand carved and polished to a fine gloss to make these new John Pearse® Buffalo Horn Picks exquisitely beautiful!
An incredibly dense and yet light material, you get the same ease and fast response as you would with tortoise shell! But, these are legal!
They are available in 4 styles:
The SAROD is a thicker pick because it is carved on both sides for thumb and index finger to hold. It is the same sort of carving as on our Ebony or Rosewood Sarod Picks mentioned below. It is also a RIGHT-HANDED pick. At the moment, we don't have this style available for left-handed players...but we do have the DIMPLE....keep reading.
The DIMPLE "feels" like a thinner pick because it is only carved on one side...the "dimple" for the thumb! That also makes it EITHER RIGHT or LEFT-handed! It also works well if you like to play with the "shoulder" of the pick rather than the point!
The FLAT is exactly that--a flat pick of Buffalo Horn. If you are interested in carving your own, it makes a starter blank!
We also have our HORN SAROD SPECIALS...made from the white part of the horn. There are never many of these so they are always special and perhaps a little harder than the black!

John Pearse® Ebony and Rosewood SAROD & FLAT PICKS
Traditional musicians in Northern India originally fashioned picks from coconut shell to play the Sarod, a multi-stringed fretless relative of the sitar and the rebab. In later years, the picks have been reduced in size and many players of the modern sarod have abandoned the coconut picks in favor of a new, more compact, pick made from ebony or rosewood.
European and American musicians traveling in India in the sizties brought these unique picks back with them and soon guitarists were discovering that they made superb picks for jazz! The tone that they produced was full and rich and immeasurably stronger than that produced by a celluloid, nylon--or even a tortoise-shell pick.
The exciting new SAROD Picks from John Pearse® are handmade for us in India by craftemen who are expert in the fashioning of exotic woods. One side has a rounded depression for your thumb while the other has a curve just perfect for your index finger to hold the pick snugly and securely. They are made for Right Handed Players. We also now have FLAT EBONY and FLAT ROSEWOOD picks available. Use either Right or Left Handed or use them as a blank to carve your perfect pick.

John Pearse® Vintage™ Thumbpicks
For years John carried his favorite thumbpick wherever he went. It was an old National, with so many miles on it that the logo had worn off completely and the celluloid was yellow and brittle. Everyone who ever tried it declared it was the best pick they ever used. It could take a tired old set of strings and make them sound young again.
Since no one was making such a pick anymore, John decided
to recreate it using an original cutting die from the 20s. The result is
a Vintage Thumbpick. In every way, it is the recreation of a classic; hand
formed to wrap around your thumb just right and, unlike modern thermo-plastic
thumbpicks, it just won't loosen up from the heat of your hand.
